Nigeria’s Security Threatens Economic Growth

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has highlighted the escalating insecurity across the nation as a significant threat to investment and economic growth, emphasizing the need for coordinated interventions. The group’s statement underscores that persistent attacks on farming communities, oil installations, and critical infrastructure – including electricity and telecommunications – are significantly impacting productivity and business costs. This instability discourages long-term investment, resulting in increased financing costs and a preference for short-term ventures.
The NESG stresses that where security fails, productivity collapses, investment retreats, and development stalls. The persistent attacks on agricultural communities, particularly in the North-West and North-East regions, are causing widespread displacement and reducing cultivated land, exacerbating food insecurity. The group points to banditry, terrorism, and farmer-herder conflicts as major contributors to this security challenge, which is impacting millions of households and reducing agricultural output.
