CBN’s Recent Monetary Policy Shifts

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | CBN’s Recent Monetary Policy Shifts

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) implemented a significant monetary policy rate reduction, cutting the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by 350 basis points on October 11, 2026—the largest single adjustment in two decades. This followed a subsequent 50 basis point reduction on February 24, 2026, during the 307th MPC meeting.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso attributed both cuts to declining headline inflation and improved macroeconomic conditions, emphasizing the MPC’s analysis of domestic and global economic trends to enhance monetary policy transmission.

Despite these measures, Nigeria’s economy remains highly susceptible to persistent domestic and external challenges that hinder its progress toward accelerated development.
