Ghana Surpasses Ethiopia in Africa’s Economic Rankings by 2026

According to the International Monetary Fund's October 2026 World Economic Outlook, Ghana's gross domestic product is projected to reach $128.64 billion in 2026, overtaking Ethiopia in Africa's economic rankings.
Ethiopia's economy is forecast to grow faster in real terms, but currency depreciation has reduced its dollar-denominated GDP, contributing to Ghana's rise. Ghana's economic strength stems from gold, cocoa, oil, and gas exports, alongside a growing consumer market, with gold remaining a key export driver.
Despite Ghana's improved macroeconomic position, challenges persist in converting this growth into long-term industrial development, job creation, and sustained investment. South Africa remains Africa's largest economy at $489.1 billion, but faces sluggish growth and high unemployment.
