Nigeria Maintains Africa’s Third-Largest Economy in 2026 IMF Projections

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Nigeria Maintains Africa's Third-Largest Economy in 2026 IMF Projections

According to the International Monetary Fund's October 2026 World Economic Outlook, Nigeria is projected to remain Africa's third-largest economy in 2026 with a gross domestic product of $386.67 billion. This ranking follows South Africa and Egypt, marking a notable shift from Nigeria's previous status as the continent's largest economy.

The country's economic standing has been impacted by prolonged currency depreciation, which has reduced the dollar value of its output despite continued growth in domestic production and market size. Reforms to the foreign exchange market have contributed to a weaker naira, increasing import costs and debt burdens while improving business conditions.

Nigeria's economy is forecasted to expand by 4.2% in 2026, outpacing South Africa's growth rate. However, persistent challenges including high business costs, infrastructure gaps, and poverty continue to limit economic progress.

South Africa maintains Africa's largest economy at $489.1 billion, though its dominance is threatened by sluggish growth and high unemployment. Ghana is projected to overtake Ethiopia as Africa's eighth-largest economy, with a $1.49 billion lead in IMF rankings.
