NSIA Insurance Profit Decline Driven by Economic Recession

KOKO Business: NSIA Insurance Profit Decline Driven by Economic Recession

NSIA Insurance Plc reported a 42.41 percent drop in underwriting profit to N956 million for the year ended December 2016, compared to N1.66 billion the prior year. This decline followed a significant reduction in gross premium income (GPI) and net premium income (NPI).

The company's underwriting profit fell as both GPI and NPI decreased by 14.05 percent and 21.70 percent, respectively, to N4.77 billion and N2.67 billion as of December 2016. Management expenses of N1.74 billion further eroded net income to N277 million.

Analysts linked the weak premium income to a 2016 economic downturn that triggered the nation's first recession in 25 years, causing insurers to face reduced revenue due to a slow-growing economy.

An industry expert suggested introducing market penetrating products could help NSIA stabilize revenue, though the company must address rising management expenses to improve profitability.
