Sterling Financial’s H1 2026 Results Show Profit Growth Amid Credit Risk Concerns

Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc reported 2026 half-year results showing gross earnings increased by 31.5 percent to N279.6 billion and profit after tax rose by 20.4 percent to N50.30 billion. However, credit impairment charges surged from N5.21 billion in H1 2025 to N23.85 billion in H1 2026, representing a 358 percent rise.
The significant increase in credit loss provisions, combined with slower loan book expansion compared to customer deposits, suggests potential risks in the institution's growth trajectory and earnings sustainability. Analyst Mike Akannor emphasized that the critical question for stakeholders is whether the growth can be sustained without escalating credit risk.
