Gas Pipeline Fire Disrupts Nigerian Industry

KOKO Business: Gas Pipeline Fire Disrupts Nigerian Industry

A fire on Tuesday night shut down the Escravos to Lagos Pipeline (ELP), critical infrastructure supplying natural gas to Lagos and downstream industries. Manufacturers dependent on this pipeline now assess financial impacts after the outage.

The ELP serves seven gas plants and seven industrial facilities, connecting to the 250,000 barrels per day Transforados terminal.

The fire also disrupted the Forcados Oil Pipeline System, which transports oil and associated gas from western delta fields to the Forcados terminal. This network is the second largest in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.

Chuks Nwani, a Lagos-based energy lawyer, noted the ELP’s critical role in powering the nation’s most essential facilities.

Manufacturers face challenges switching to alternatives like Low Pour Fuel Oil, which is costly but necessary to maintain operations.
