Nigeria’s Digital Skills Gap and Employment Strategy Imperatives

Nigeria requires an employment strategy that links digital skills to productive economic activity to address the challenge of ensuring technological change expands opportunities rather than concentrating benefits among a small group of businesses and highly skilled professionals. Without such a strategy, even Nigerians with advanced digital skills may struggle to find suitable employment at home.
Specific sectors like healthcare, agriculture, media, and finance could benefit from targeted training in AI-assisted diagnostics, digital crop monitoring, responsible AI research, and automated financial software.
However, digital training alone cannot overcome inadequate electricity, expensive internet access, and limited business financing. Nigeria must also tackle the digital divide that excludes rural communities and low-income households from suitable devices and reliable internet access to ensure efficiency gains do not translate into widespread employment exclusion.
