Nigeria’s Fuel Crisis and Proposed Solutions

KOKO Business: Nigeria's Fuel Crisis and Proposed Solutions

Nigeria faces prolonged fuel scarcity, a situation lasting nearly two months that has strained the National Petroleum Corporation and the ministry of petroleum resources.

Ibe Kachikwu outlined three solutions during a January 4 National Assembly hearing, emphasizing Nigeria's shame in importing petrol after 40 years of independence.

The first proposed solution involves permitting oil marketers to import fuel and sell at their prices while NNPC stations maintain a price of N145 per litre.

Kachikwu suggested creating a foreign exchange concession or tax incentive for marketers to import fuel at the approved N145 price point.

This approach, however, does not fully resolve pricing template challenges within Nigeria’s current system.

Long-term resolution requires fixing the country’s refineries and restructuring petroleum distribution and importation strategies.

Kachikwu stressed that selling crude oil at raw levels is detrimental to Nigeria’s economic interests.
