Indonesian Environment Minister Calls for Regional Carbon Revenue Development

Indonesian Minister of Environment Jumhur Hidayat spoke to reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, after a technical briefing for regional leaders on Carbon Pricing Implementation and Climate-Resilient Low-Carbon Development. He urged regional government-owned enterprises (BUMDs) to explore carbon-related businesses as a new revenue source for their regions.
Jumhur stated that BUMDs need to identify carbon units or activities that can be properly maintained and developed to drive regional revenue. He noted that regional enterprises could turn carbon trading into a reliable revenue source while maintaining strict land management standards, ensuring regional carbon potential remains well-preserved.
Jumhur highlighted mangrove restoration as an example, noting that mangroves absorb approximately 3,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per hectare annually.
