Nigerian Power Minister States Government Cannot Fund Electricity Shortfalls

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Nigerian Power Minister States Government Cannot Fund Electricity Shortfalls

The Nigerian Federal Government has stated it can no longer sustain the financial burden of electricity tariff shortfalls while maintaining reliable power access for all citizens. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe disclosed this at a recent energy conference hosted by the Harvard Business School Association of Nigeria in Lagos.

Tegbe emphasized that electricity tariffs set at commercially sustainable levels would be ineffective without adequate revenue collection from customers. He noted that power providers must receive payment to ensure pricing models function properly.

The government is currently reviewing the electricity market structure and tariff assumptions in partnership with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
