UN Chief Proposes $3.3 Billion Budget Cut Amid Global Challenges

Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the need for the United Nations has never been greater amid climate disruption, AI advancements, conflict, and rising hunger. He presented a $3.3 billion programme budget proposal for 2027, representing a $40.8 million reduction from the 2026 approved level.
The UN chief emphasized that the 2027 budget would be 1.2 per cent below the 2026 approved amount, noting the UN80 Initiative’s progress since its launch over a year ago. He highlighted efforts to enhance Secretariat efficiency and effectiveness through staff consolidation and gender parity achievements.
Guterres also reported that payroll operations have been consolidated, contributing to the UN’s goal of better equipping staff to address a rapidly changing global landscape.
