CPPE Clarifies Fuel Relief as Non-Subsidy Measure

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | CPPE Clarifies Fuel Relief as Non-Subsidy Measure

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has stated that the Federal Government’s temporary fuel price relief initiative, administered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, does not constitute a return to petrol subsidy. CPPE emphasizes this intervention is distinct from the previous subsidy regime, which Nigeria removed in May 2023 to reduce fiscal pressures.

CPPE attributes recent fuel price increases to global energy market fluctuations and geopolitical tensions, asserting that targeted relief measures protect households and businesses without reinstating subsidies. The organisation maintains the relief initiative remains a temporary adjustment rather than a policy reversal.

The CPPE’s position aligns with its claim that the Federal Government’s fuel price relief should not be interpreted as a reversal of petrol subsidy removal, reinforcing that the intervention addresses current market conditions without restoring the former subsidy framework.
