Iranian Tactics Target Strait of Hormuz Shipping Amid Oil Price Strategy

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Iranian Tactics Target Strait of Hormuz Shipping Amid Oil Price Strategy

Iranian officials describe deploying new tactics to disrupt commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to sustain high global oil prices and influence U.S. midterm elections. The waterway, which previously handled one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, has seen severe traffic disruptions, elevated insurance costs, and rising energy prices.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has increasingly used unarmed spotters on small boats to relay target coordinates to strike units, including a recently intercepted dhow neutralized by U.S. forces. A second official described the situation as a strategic chess match, asserting Tehran seeks to prevent U.S. leadership from stabilizing or lowering oil prices ahead of the November ballot.

Despite these actions, U.S. military assessments indicate the decimation of Iran's navy has constrained Tehran's capacity to halt the steady increase in oil exports through the strait.
