FG Dismisses World Bank Debt Concerns

The Federal Government has criticized the World Bank’s revenue figures, rejecting concerns about debt sustainability. The Federal Ministry of Finance argued that the data used to calculate interest payments as a percentage of revenue was incomplete and misleading.
According to the ministry, Nigeria’s fiscal position has improved, with government revenue growing faster than interest payments. The ministry stated that recent analysis citing the World Bank’s October 2026 Nigeria Development Update was inaccurate.
The ministry emphasized that the calculation of interest payments consuming 124 per cent of revenue in the first half of 2026 was flawed. It claimed the figures did not account for debt obligations managed on behalf of state governments.
