Matatu Owners Association President Denies Strike Plans Amid Diesel Price Hike

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Matatu Owners Association President Denies Strike Plans Amid Diesel Price Hike

The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) president, Albert Karakacha, has denied any plans for a strike following the recent increase in diesel prices. Karakacha confirmed that there will be no industrial action from the transport sector after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) raised diesel prices to KSh 227.76 per litre for the October-November cycle.

Karakacha stated that stakeholders in the transport sector must adapt to the new prices, with commuters expected to bear the brunt of the cost increase.

In addition to addressing the diesel price issue, Karakacha criticized the government for not fulfilling a previous agreement made during a meeting in Mombasa. The government had allegedly promised to assist in the importation of over 100,000 electric public service vehicles to address the challenges posed by the volatile diesel economy.
