Thailand’s Rice Export Strategy Amid Decline

Thailand's Commerce Ministry is intensifying efforts to boost rice exports following a 19.26% year-on-year decline in shipments from January to September 2026. The strategy includes direct outreach to key importers in the Philippines, Japan, and South Africa, as well as hosting an international rice conference.
The ministry also aims to address logistical challenges, such as a shortage of port labor, and is promoting Thai rice at international trade fairs to regain market share. El Niño concerns have impacted purchases from the Philippines and Malaysia, while Thailand's 2027 export target remains under review.
Plans were outlined on 20 October 2026 to strengthen rice exports after the significant year-on-year drop in shipments. The ministry is focusing on government-to-government sales to counter strong competition and declining sales to Iraq.
