China Youth Unemployment Slight Drop Amid Persistent Challenges

China's youth unemployment rate showed a minor decline in September, yet young jobseekers continue to struggle in a competitive market. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the unemployment rate for individuals aged 16 to 24, excluding students, dropped to 18 per cent from 18.9 per cent in August.
Despite the slight improvement, the job market remains challenging due to weak domestic demand and limited job creation. Employers are increasingly prioritizing candidates with relevant work experience over academic qualifications, making it harder for recent graduates to secure employment.
This year has seen a record 12.7 million university graduates enter the job market, contributing to a high youth unemployment rate in August, which matched its level from the previous year. The rate reached its highest point since the calculation methodology was revised in 2023 to exclude students.
