Fuel Tax Not Under Consideration, Says Oyedele

Mr Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has clarified that a fuel tax is not being considered by the federal government. His statement comes in response to reports suggesting the government may introduce such a tax after economic stability is achieved.
In a statement posted on his official X account on October 20, 2026, Oyedele said his remarks during an interview with Arise News had been misrepresented. He emphasized that a fuel tax was not under discussion.
Oyedele argued that introducing a fuel tax following the removal of petrol subsidies would be insensitive, given the financial strain currently faced by Nigerians.
