Senate Passes Oil Spill Response Legislation

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Senate Passes Oil Spill Response Legislation

The Senate passed the ‘National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026’ following its consideration of the Environment Committee’s report during plenary.

The proposed legislation aims to amend the NOSDRA Establishment Act 2006, granting the agency authority to enforce fines and establish criminal penalties for non-compliance with environmental laws in the petroleum sector.

Senator Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North Senatorial District, stated that oil spills and pollution have continued to harm the environment and affect the livelihoods of residents in oil-producing communities.

Monguno argued that current penalties are inadequate to prevent environmental violations, necessitating stronger sanctions to ensure adherence to environmental regulations.
