Atiku Calls for NASS to Block FG’s $21.6bn Foreign Loan Request

Atiku has called on the National Assembly to stop the Federal Government's request for a $21.6bn foreign loan. The proposal, outlined in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary, seeks approval for the 2026–2027 Supplementary External Borrowing Plan.

President Tinubu urged lawmakers to approve the request quickly to enable the timely execution of proposed projects. He emphasized the need for early approval to ensure the prompt implementation of the borrowing plan.

The request will face legislative review, with Akpabio noting that parts of the borrowing plan had previously been included in earlier government borrowing arrangements and budget approvals. He also highlighted the necessity of external borrowing to address Nigeria's significant infrastructure deficits, particularly in power, transportation, and healthcare sectors.
