BP Re-enters Solar Market with Strategic Investment

BP has returned to solar energy after six years of absence, investing $200 million in Lightsource, a solar generator company, to boost renewable energy presence and generate profits.
The oil company acquired a 43 percent stake in Europe’s largest solar developer, renaming the entity Lightsource BP to align with its renewable energy strategy.
Lightsource BP aims to expand solar capacity to 8 gigawatts across the United States, India, Europe, and the Middle East through large-scale projects.
BP’s recent investment follows a failed solar venture six years ago, when it wrote down billions due to competition from Chinese solar panel manufacturers.
Dev Sanyal, BP’s Alternative Energy head, noted Lightsource’s focus on solar power generation rather than hardware production creates a more profitable business model.
Sanyal emphasized the solar venture offers strong returns, cash flow, and profitability compared to previous hardware-focused investments.
