Federal Government to Reappraise $6 Billion Oil Swap Agreement

KOKO Business: Federal Government to Reappraise $6 Billion Oil Swap Agreement

Petroleum Minister Ibe Kachikwu confirmed the Federal Government will reevaluate the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation's $6 billion crude oil swap agreement. This action follows the agreement's failure due to operational shortcomings.

The swap agreement required NNPC to lift crude oil monthly in exchange for delivering Nigerian standard petroleum products valued at the crude received, subject to terms outlined in the term sheet.

Kachikwu attributed the agreement's collapse to operators' inability to supply petrol and substituting diesel instead, while noting the NNPC also bears responsibility for the failure.

Long-term solutions include enhancing Nigeria's refining capacity, improving product distribution, and deregulating the petroleum sector to allow competitive pricing and import activities.
