KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Kenya Tax Revenue Surges 14.85% in September Amid Fiscal Pressures

Kenya’s tax revenue collections increased by 14.85 per cent to Sh258.31 billion in September, providing a revenue boost for the government despite ongoing fiscal challenges.

The National Treasury reported that borrowing and external financing supported government spending obligations during the third month of the 2026/27 financial year.

Non-tax revenue amounted to Sh13.95 billion, with other domestic financing contributing Sh364.39 million.

This September tax collection was part of a broader revenue recovery observed in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

The Treasury update explicitly stated that tax revenue collected reached KSh258.31 billion, representing a 14.85% increase.

However, the Kenya Revenue Authority noted a Sh58.2 billion shortfall against its ordinary revenue target for the first quarter, indicating difficulties in converting higher collections into adequate budget funding.
