NDC Presidential Candidate Questions Petrol Discount Impact on Poverty and Insecurity

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | NDC Presidential Candidate Questions Petrol Discount Impact on Poverty and Insecurity

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has questioned whether the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol price discount would reduce poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and inequality in Nigeria. He described the initiative as a reactive policy that substituted political optics for sound economic planning in a statement posted on his X platform on Sunday.

Obi argued that the discount, which he stated amounts to less than five per cent of petrol costs, is unlikely to address the broader economic challenges facing Nigerians. This position follows his earlier call for collective action to tackle poverty, as highlighted by Anambra’s first lady.
