NEMA Proposes 7,128 Housing Units in Nairobi Amid Environmental Review

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has initiated a public consultation process for a proposed affordable housing project in Nairobi, which aims to construct 7,128 units across multiple locations. The initiative follows a court order that previously paused construction due to environmental compliance concerns.
Public feedback is being sought through notices published in the Kenya Gazette, which invite individuals to comment on five Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) reports for developments in Mugumo-ini Ward. These reports outline the project's environmental and social implications.
The housing project is divided into five lots, with four containing 1,386 units each and one lot comprising 1,584 units. The development includes a range of amenities such as access roads, water supply systems, shopping areas, and children's play spaces.
