Nigeria Debt Burden Exceeds Revenue, World Bank Reports

Nigeria's debt burden is currently exceeding its total revenue by N1.5trn, according to a report by the Federal Government. This figure highlights a significant challenge in managing public finances, exceeding revenue by N7.7trn, according to the Star.
The World Bank has indicated that interest payments alone consumed 124.2 per cent of federal revenue between January and June, significantly impacting the government’s ability to fund essential infrastructure projects and public services.
A notable increase in interest payments, rising by N2.1trn, underscores the pressure on the government to manage its debt obligations effectively. This increase was driven by high domestic borrowing costs, according to the report.
