Nigerian Petrol Price Deregulation Debate Intensifies

President Muhammadu Buhari has initiated efforts to address Nigeria's petrol price deregulation challenges, as long queues and elevated prices at stations across the country have reignited discussions about the downstream petroleum industry's regulatory framework.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) accuses petroleum marketers and tradegroups like DAPPMA, MOMAN, and IPMAN of manipulating prices, while also attributing price spikes to panic buying trends.
Current petrol pricing at N145/litre falls short of landing costs at N171/litre amid rising global oil prices, which have recently approached $70 per barrel, creating economic tensions within the sector.
A price increase to N175-200/litre could trigger widespread resistance from citizens, as historical precedents show how subsidy protests have destabilized governance, particularly following former President Goodluck Jonathan's 2012 challenges.
