Nigeria’s Agricultural Strategy for Food Security

Alexander Isong, WAF Nigeria's Country Director, emphasized Nigeria's agricultural potential during a statement on Thursday in Lagos ahead of the 2026 World Food Day.
Isong noted Nigeria has the necessary land, labor, and market access to become a key African agricultural leader but stressed that achieving this requires strategic investment and coordinated action across the sector.
He called for shifting focus from farm production alone to an integrated food system that links storage, processing, distribution, and markets through technology and commercial viability.
Inadequate storage and transportation infrastructure, including the lack of pre-cooling systems and refrigerated transport, were identified as critical barriers to reducing post-harvest losses.
Strengthening these facilities would improve produce quality, extend shelf life, and ensure more food reaches consumers, according to Isong.
