Nigeria’s Food Security and Fiscal Policy Concerns

Sanusi criticized Nigeria’s decision to allow food imports, including Thai rice, after removing petrol subsidies and rising food prices during his Sustainable Table Series speech in Lagos on Thursday. He emphasized the need to protect local farmers and agribusinesses from import competition while ensuring affordability for low-income households.
Sanusi also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in fiscal policy, noting that citizens would support economic reforms if public services showed tangible improvements to address Nigeria’s debt-servicing challenges.
At the event focused on sustainable development, Kayode Olaniyan advocated for investments in energy, technology, and food storage to reduce post-harvest losses and food inflation.
