Nigeria’s Textile Imports Surge Amid Domestic Industry Decline

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Nigeria's Textile Imports Surge Amid Domestic Industry Decline

Nigeria imported textile products and textile articles valued at N1.061 trillion in 2025, a rise from N726.18 billion in 2024, per National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data.

The first half of 2026 saw textile imports reach N578.51 billion, further increasing reliance on foreign fabrics and textile goods.

Commodities Nigeria spends over N1 trillion annually on fabric imports, yet domestic cotton farms and textile factories unable to meet this demand face survival challenges.

The Cotton, Textile and Garment Development Forum (CTGDF) has called on the federal government to protect textile and cotton-processing factories at risk of receivership while recovering legitimate public loans.

The CTGDF’s initiative aligns with ongoing government efforts to create the Cotton, Textile and Garment Development Board to coordinate sector revival from cotton farming through ginning, textile manufacturing, and garment production.
