Petrol Discount Policy Criticized as Economic Misstep

Obi criticized the temporary petrol discount policy implemented by President Bola Tinubu's All Progressives Congress government as a substitution of political optics for sound economic policy. This claim was made in a statement titled 'One Month Discount on Petrol: From Reactive Policies to Flawed Outcomes!' on Sunday.
Obi argued that the government's decision to remove the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, lacked consultation and proper assessment of economic consequences, directly harming ordinary Nigerians' livelihoods.
Additionally, Obi highlighted that subsequent economic measures, such as floating the naira and tax reforms, exacerbated the hardship caused by the subsidy removal, further undermining the policy's intended benefits.
