RBI Implements Emergency Measures to Stabilize Rupee Amid Weakness

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | RBI Implements Emergency Measures to Stabilize Rupee Amid Weakness

The Reserve Bank of India introduced emergency measures to alleviate rupee pressure as the currency approached record lows. These actions redirect major state-owned oil companies’ dollar purchases from the spot foreign exchange market and increase currency hedging costs. The rupee has fallen over 7% against the US dollar this year despite central bank interventions and interest-rate hikes.

The RBI’s new facility targets two key pressures: the high dollar needs of India’s oil importers and rising demand for financial instruments to protect against rupee depreciation. The initiative specifically addresses Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum, and Bharat Petroleum’s daily dollar requirements.

These state-owned oil companies will access the facility starting Monday, bypassing the spot market to obtain dollars directly from the central bank’s foreign exchange reserves. The measures aim to reduce competition for scarce foreign currency and stabilize the rupee amid surging oil prices and global bond yields.
