Singapore Expands Haze Probe to 10 Palm Oil Firms

Singapore has broadened its investigation into haze-generating fires in Indonesia, targeting 10 locally registered companies operating in the palm oil and forestry sectors. The National Environment Agency (NEA) has requested detailed information from these firms, including land concessions in Indonesia and their fire prevention strategies.
Under the Transboundary Haze Act, Singapore has the authority to impose daily fines of up to US$78,000 on companies that contribute to pollution through haze-producing fires. The NEA emphasized the need for transparency regarding the companies' relationships with other relevant entities.
Among the firms under scrutiny are prominent names such as Wilmar International, Golden Agri International, and First Resources. These companies are being asked to provide documentation related to their operations and firefighting measures in Indonesia.
