KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | South Africa Maintains Africa's Largest Economy Status Amid Economic Challenges

South Africa holds the position of Africa’s largest economy in the IMF’s 2026 projections, with a GDP of $489.08 billion. The country faces persistent unemployment, sluggish growth, and weak investment despite this economic size. Public debt is projected to reach 78.5% of GDP, which restricts fiscal flexibility and growth potential.

The IMF’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook ranks South Africa ahead of Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria in nominal GDP. Egypt follows at $442.89 billion, Nigeria at $386.67 billion, and Algeria at $331.89 billion. Ghana is projected to overtake Ethiopia as Africa’s eighth-largest economy, with a $1.49 billion lead in GDP.
