Sub-Saharan Africa’s Urban Growth Potential and Challenges

A new report highlights the potential for sub-Saharan Africa's urban population to expand significantly, with projections indicating the addition of 748 million urban residents between 2025 and 2050. This growth is seen as a major opportunity for job creation and economic growth, but requires strategic government investment in infrastructure, urban governance, and private capital.
The World Bank emphasized that cities can drive economic growth if governments focus on areas that support business clustering and ease access to employment. Paschal Donohoe, World Bank Group Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer, highlighted the importance of reforms in infrastructure, land administration, connectivity, and financing to attract private investment and generate formal jobs.
Urban households in the region are reported to spend more per adult than their rural counterparts, indicating the economic advantages of urban living. However, the report warned that rapid urbanization alone is insufficient to improve living standards, and governments must address specific challenges in major cities, urban outskirts, and smaller towns.
