Trump Eases Russian Diesel Imports Amid Market Adjustments

President Trump temporarily lifted US sanctions on Russian diesel imports following claims that Moscow committed to supplying additional fuel to global markets. This action aims to address rising fuel costs while drawing criticism from Ukrainian officials and US lawmakers concerned about potential revenue for Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump stated that Russia would immediately deliver over 300,000 metric tons of diesel—equivalent to 2.25 million barrels—to US and international markets, with further shipments planned for November and beyond. This announcement comes as the administration seeks to manage fuel prices ahead of the November 3 congressional elections.
The Treasury Department authorized Russian diesel imports until April 7, reversing October 2025 restrictions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. Diesel prices dropped nearly 5% to $4.64 per gallon after the agreement was announced.
