World Bank Links Nigeria Loan to Reforms

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | World Bank Links Nigeria Loan to Reforms

The World Bank has connected Nigeria’s access to a $500 million loan with economic reforms, fiscal transparency, and independent audits, increasing oversight of the federal government’s borrowing approach.

The loan agreement, signed by Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 6, allows for two withdrawals of $249.375 million each, with $1.25 million designated for the front-end fee.

The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), part of the World Bank Group, is funding the loan to assist in reforms aimed at enhancing the business environment, boosting public revenue, and lowering trade barriers.

The first tranche of the loan will be released only after the World Bank confirms the successful implementation of the program and the adequacy of Nigeria’s macroeconomic policy framework.

The loan’s closing date is set for December 31, 2027.
