Dangote Refinery’s Petrol Strategy

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Dangote Refinery’s Petrol Strategy

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has approved a group of 20 marketers to purchase petrol through a new consortium arrangement. The approved group includes A.A. Rano, MRS Oil Nigeria, Techno Oil and NNPC Retail, alongside other firms. On 8 October, the refinery told marketers that the announced group was not the full consortium and that additional members could still be named.

Under the arrangement, petrol purchases are channelled through approved consortium members, giving them a defined role in distribution to the domestic market. The move follows the refinery’s earlier decision to stop supplying major marketers it identified as fuel importers.

The refinery has raised concerns that blending its Euro 5 petrol with imported fuel could affect product quality and its distribution structure. The change comes amid wider disagreement over import licences and competition between local refining and fuel imports. The available details do not quantify purchase volumes, prices or any effect on supply, so the commercial impact cannot yet be measured.
