Ethiopia’s Debt Crisis: Beyond Funding Amounts

Ethiopia's financial challenges extend beyond the scale of recent funding announcements. While a billion-dollar financing package may appear as a significant economic development, it does not address the deeper issues within the country's debt situation.
The International Development Association, a part of the World Bank, plays a crucial role in Ethiopia's financial strategy. This organization provides concessional financing, which is vital for the nation's economic stability.
According to a joint assessment by the IMF and the World Bank, Ethiopia received net transfers of US$1.5 billion from the IDA during the 2023/24 fiscal year. This figure is slightly lower than the US$1.7 billion recorded in the previous fiscal year.
