South Africa’s Reserve Bank aims to enhance cash access by promoting shared ATMs across banks, as part of a broader strategy to reduce financial costs and improve service in underserved areas. The plan includes making smaller withdrawals free, with the goal of increasing accessibility for all customers.

The proposed shared ATM network will support various transactions, including withdrawals, deposits, and balance inquiries. Smaller transactions will be free, aligning with the central bank’s objective to lower cash-related expenses for users.

Implementation plans were detailed on 16 October, advancing the Reserve Bank’s strategy to expand financial inclusion. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to modernize cash access and support economic accessibility.
