The Federal Government's debt service bill, exceeding N7trn, surpasses six months of revenue by N1.5trn, according to THE POINT's investigation. Despite increased revenue, the government spent N7.7trn on debt interest in the first half of 2026, which is N1.5trn more than its total revenue of N6.2trn.

The mounting pressure of debt servicing on public finances is evident despite revenue gains following economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2023. This highlights the challenges the government faces in managing its financial obligations.

THE POINT’s analysis of data from the Debt Management Office revealed that the Federal Government’s total debt stock rose by 95.33 per cent in three years, from N78.21trn in June 2023 to N152.77trn in June 2026.
