Music Labels Challenge Claude Over Copyrighted Lyrics

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Music Labels Challenge Claude Over Copyrighted Lyrics

Music labels are accusing Anthropic of infringing on copyrighted lyrics through its AI chatbot, Claude. The dispute centers around the use of copyrighted material in the AI's outputs, with labels claiming it could impact industry revenue.

Anthropic asserts that users prompt Claude to generate lyrics, and the company holds only secondary liability for using copyrighted works. However, music publishers argue that Claude's outputs infringe on copyright by reproducing material verbatim or creating derivative works.

Concord Music Group's attorney, Matthew Oppenheim, highlighted that Claude's generation of synthetic songs competes with human artists, undermining the music marketplace. He emphasized that such actions violate the Copyright Act by diluting original works.
