Finance minister Enoch Godongwana presented the 2026 medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) in parliament on October 21. The statement included a fuel levy reduction of R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel, effective from November 4 to December 1.

Political parties have responded cautiously to the MTBPS, with some expressing approval while others remain critical. The Treasury has identified additional savings of R38.1bn over the medium term, building on the R12bn outlined in the 2026 budget.

The budget policy statement has led to differing opinions among political parties, with some acknowledging the measures as a step in the right direction while others remain concerned about the economic outlook.
