Kenya Advances Oil Export Plans with New Trading Name Initiative

Kenya has initiated a process to select a trading name for its crude oil from South Lokichar, a critical step in preparing for the export of the commodity. The grade of the crude is noted for being light sweet, with low sulphur levels, which makes it more cost-effective and environmentally friendly for refining into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has set a deadline of October 29 for Kenyans to submit proposals for the trading name of the crude oil. Commercial production of the oil is scheduled to commence on December 1, 2026, following which the country plans to leverage the chosen name for market positioning.
Kenya is also experiencing a hiring boom in its petroleum sector, indicating growing interest and investment in the industry. Additionally, the country has expressed willingness to increase its stake in the Dangote refinery, highlighting its strategic approach to expanding its energy infrastructure.
