Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa has expressed concerns regarding the delays in the construction of the Tabora–Isaka section of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which is being handled by Turkish contractor Yapi Merkezi.

Mbarawa highlighted that Chinese subcontractor CCECC had made significant progress, achieving five per cent completion in September and October 2026, which equates to the progress made by the main contractor over four years.

The government has allocated Sh3.67 trillion for the 424km SGR link from Makutupora to Isaka, with Mbarawa inspecting the projects across various lots during his tour on October 26, 2026.

Mbarawa noted that terminating Yapi Merkezi's contract could lead to further delays and additional financial challenges, prompting the government to carefully consider its implications.
