Ghana Launches Sustainable Housing Initiative

Mr Ahmed Ibrahim introduced the Ghana’s Built Environment Through Sustainable Materials project during a ceremony attended by dignitaries. The initiative, launched with support from UNEP, UN-Habitat and BMZ, aims to promote locally produced, low-carbon building materials.
He highlighted that Ghana faces a housing deficit of approximately 1.83 million units, with about 1.302 million people residing in containers.
The Minister emphasized that addressing youth unemployment requires tackling the housing deficit, as an ambitious housing program would generate employment for artisans and skilled workers in the construction sector.
The demonstration project will test Ghana’s 2024 roadmap to decarbonize the buildings and construction sector by 2050. He also encouraged stakeholders to use locally available resources like limestone, salt, timber, steel and sand.
