Legal Challenge Over Drumcree Parade Ban

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Legal Challenge Over Drumcree Parade Ban

Portadown District of the Orange Order is challenging the decision by Northern Ireland Secretary of State Chris Bryant to ban the Drumcree parade. The legal action follows a request from PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher to review the original decision.

The PSNI warned that dissident republicans might use guns and petrol bombs against police if they tried to clear protesters blocking the parade along the Garvaghy Road. Loyalist paramilitaries supporting the parade were also seen as a potential source of violence.

Portadown District accused the Chief Constable of overstepping his powers by commenting on political matters, stating that facilitating the parade could have "catastrophic consequences" for the peace process and Stormont Executive.
