NCC Warns AI Fraud Threatens Telecom and Banking

The Nigerian Communications Commission has raised concerns about the increasing use of artificial intelligence by cybercriminals, which it says poses serious risks to Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure, banking system, and national security.
Dr Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, highlighted these threats during a speech at the second International Cybersecurity Conference in Abuja. He emphasized that AI-powered attacks are becoming more advanced and capable of breaching digital networks and financial transactions.
Maida warned that attacks on telecom operators could have broader consequences, potentially disrupting other critical sectors. He stated that an attack on a telecom provider equates to an attack on the financial sector, national defense, and civil governance.
