Uganda’s Financial Fraud Risks and Institutional Responses

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Uganda's Financial Fraud Risks and Institutional Responses

Financial fraud is increasingly difficult to detect as more individuals use mobile phones, cards, and digital platforms to access financial services. Fraudsters are adapting their tactics by employing fake websites, social media accounts, phone calls, SMS messages, and WhatsApp to deceive customers into sharing sensitive information.

In Uganda, the financial impact of these evolving fraud methods is already substantial. Many fraudulent activities start with a simple message or phone call, often designed to trick victims into revealing personal or financial details.

To combat these threats, financial institutions are advised to invest in technology that enables real-time transaction monitoring and fraud detection. Additionally, banks should enhance internal safeguards by establishing a 24-hour fraud monitoring team and improving internal review and assurance processes.
